Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May)

Philippines was colonized by three different countries the Spaniards, Americans, and Japanese. Spaniards who ruled our country for 333 years had thought and influenced us different things.

One of our traditions that the Spaniards has influenced us is during the month of May we call it "Flores de Mayo" or the Flowers of May. Most of the flowers blossom during this month so it is also the perfect time to do Santa Cruzan. This is the event where all the beautiful ladies in town are being selected and paraded in the town plaza. Some are escorted with men. Here are some of the photos:

Offering flowers to Mama Mary is also one of the activities during May. For me this tradition shows the impact of the Spanish's influences. Our culture is really influenced by different countries.
